YouTube MarketingYouTube was one of the earliest businesses to hit upon an idea that ended up becoming a backbone of the internet subculture. The idea of sharing a video with anyone you want along with a handy space for comments and the ability to save the video and view it later are all innovations that YouTube pioneered and have now become standard fare for any video-hosting website. With the advent of YouTube, however, came the idea of viral marketing using videos. Although many of us will never create a viral marketing sensation in our lifetime, there are many simple ways you can add oomph to your YouTube marketing. Here are a look at some of the ways you can spruce up your videos with an air towards marketing something that the general public will want.

Create Videos That Are Compelling

There is a lot of marketing research currently going on to determine what qualifies as a viral video. As it stands, viral videos are the exceptions to the rule. Your videos won’t actually go viral, but if they’re compelling and address a certain topic, then they’ll be a hit with the crowd that goes in for that topic. Forbes.com noted in a study regarding response to marketing that,

Most respondents prefer video over white papers, case studies, even live demos with reps.

Video is not a new medium, but the ease with which YouTube videos spread makes it a very easy way to get your message out. Once your video addresses a certain niche, then it is likely that persons who are interested in it will share it with other like-minded individuals. Because of the free sharing of information across the internet and the ease of use of YouTube to do it, you can have a far-reaching internet presence, despite not being able to make the video viral.

Make Sure People Looking for Your Video Can Find It

One of the biggest problems new YouTube marketers tend to have is making their videos hard to find. YouTube is spidered by search engines, just like any other site, but the internal YouTube index depends upon how well you describe your video. It is unlikely that your video detailing the nuances of cake batter mix will be referenced as such when it was uploaded with the name ‘Title’. Shih et. al. in an article published in the ‘Journal of Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing & Service Industries’ state that,

Results reveal that a well-designed SEO strategy, with the incorporation of social networking, can effectively enhance the website’s visibility and exposure.

Although Shih et al. were talking about general search engine optimization, the fact remains that visibility and exposure are what you need to ensure that your video gets the audience it needs. To do this, ensure that the keywords for your video are used in the title and in the description, at least once. Use a full URL in your description as well and ensure that you use your keywords strategically, without bombarding the description with it and turning an otherwise readable entry into mush. The tags field is used to include all of your related keywords so that people searching for the topic will find your video.

Clever Use of Annotations

YouTube allows for the use of annotations in videos, and this is important from a marketing perspective because it allows you to draw users who have seen one of your videos in to see others, thereby offering the potential to get a new subscriber. In SEO marketing, this is analogous to links within an article or series of articles that lead to others you may have written. This encourages the user to peruse your work and possibly look out for more articles written by you. The same principles apply here. Once you followed the tip above about making compelling content, it should be easy to convince a user that they should follow your stuff because it would appeal to them. Annotations are usually unobtrusive overlays, usually put in a corner somewhere and popping up momentarily to tell the watcher about another video you made that may be of interest to them. Social Media Guru Julian King notes,

YouTube annotations are among the most valuable tools that YouTube offers us to increase the members of the channel, make more involving videos, add information, create interactive stories and link to other videos, channels, profiles, Google Plus or YouTube search results.

Use Bulletins

One of the more innovative features YouTube has is the ability to post a bulletin. This allows your video to show up as a tagged post on the pages of your friends and subscribers. This immediately draws their interest and can be an invaluable tool for getting the initial run of your video out to the public. Followers of your friends can also access these bulletins. Once the initial thrust of the video is out, the engaging nature of the content and the unobtrusive annotations can garner you a lot more subscribers. The video needs to start somewhere and posting a bulletin with it is a great way to give it an initial sendoff.

Link to Other Social Media Platforms

One of the things YouTube does with great success is make their videos available to be embedded in other social media sites. So places like Facebook and LinkedIn can easily have the video for perusal by all of their users without them having to leave the safety and comfort of the site that they are familiar with. These social media platforms all have their own ability to share and post to groups and friends. Once the video falls within a niche that people will follow, users of that niche will find themselves sharing it with other friends who have the same likes. It’s like setting a fire in dry grass, all it takes if that initial spark, the first share, and before long it’s a sharing conflagration.

YouTube is one of the places where marketing will find the people who want to see your video. The ease of subscription and sharing of the content on the site makes it truly a treasure for any modern media marketer. However, there is a fine line between making a video and being an effective YouTube marketer and it’s up to you to find that happy balance.

WebinarsWebinars can be an effective way to market your business. In starting the process, the most important thing to keep in mind is remembering how what you are doing will 1) help your audience, and 2) be received by your audience. The first has to do with content and how relevant it is to your target audience; how it will help them and make their lives better. The second one has more to do with presentation, since a poorly run one or one filled with technical glitches will be ineffective since it will turn an audience off no matter how relevant and helpful the content is.

Presentation

It is very common for someone to prepare a great presentation full of excellent ideas, but then when presenting those slides to an audience, to stumble and stammer, constantly trying to get a good flow down. If we don’t prepare – and this means practice – we won’t be effective. When we practice, we will see areas where our train of ideas may not flow logically and lead naturally to the next point under discussion. Furthermore, Jennifer at teachgoodstuff.com has this to say:

Webinars are a serious exercise in multitasking. And, the first time you practice your webinar shouldn’t be right before you go live. A day or two before, do a few run-throughs to work out the kinks and get comfortable with what you’re presenting.

Webinars can be complex. You have to handle the participants, learn the controls for moderating content, make sure the audio is working, and depending on the size of your guest list and your bandwidth, understand enough of the technical basics to be able to help the inevitable person who can’t get the video or audio to work. This is another argument for practicing ahead of time, doing a “dress rehearsal” so to speak.

An effective strategy here is to get a second computer and sign on as a guest. You’ll get a chance to see exactly what your audience will, so this can help iron out any technical glitches like audio-video sync issues, very long lag times, or blank audio or video problems. Since some may be using their smart phones, try signing in with one of these, too. Using this second computer is not just good for practicing ahead of time, it is a good strategy for use while the webinar is live.

Content

During your preparation process, it is a good idea to contact potential listeners to ask them what they would be interested in hearing about. Listen carefully and learn what their questions are. You may find a common thread among them that will help you in establishing your theme. David Kirkpatrick from the Marketing Sherpa emphasizes:

The goal of the webinar strategy is “education first,”…The attendees have to walk away with more knowledge than they walked in with.

Remember also that you are the expert, and as such, may take many things for granted. If you are talking about web marketing, for example, you may assume that everyone will understand what SEO means. Depending on your audience, however, this may not be the case at all, and talking over their heads like that may get them leaving your webinar thinking, “I should have taken the blue pill.”

One last suggestion falls into both of these categories: Don’t overwhelm your slides with words, and definitely don’t just read your slides. It is far better to have just a few words with lots of pictures or charts. Carefully chosen, short bullet points that are quick to read at a glance give impact and will help retention. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Many businesseMarketing Strategiess have spent countless hours building a webpage to market their product. They learn the basics of web design themselves or they hire someone to get them started, put numerous products or services on there, and then wait. And wait. And wait. And nothing happens. The frustration this engenders can lead to real disappointment when it seems like no one is interested in their services. However, there is no doubt that E-commerce is the place to be now. Forbes mentions:

E-commerce sales in the US rose by $33 billion from 2011 to 2012. Mobile shopping alone is predicted to represent a quarter of all e-commerce by 2016 and by 2014, mobile will account for 30% of all US Internet access and will likely surpass total desktop usage.

With all the potential out there, there must be ways to tap into a profitable niche. If you have had difficulty converting page views to sales, here are a few tips that may help you get on the way to profitability. With all of them, an important step is to evaluate and test. Some of them may not apply 100% to your situation, but the principles certainly do. Once you have evaluated, make sure to test any strategy to verify that it will work for you in the long run.

Simplify

If you’ve been to an overly busy website and had a hard time figuring out what it is that they are all about, think of what the problem is. Many times people try to be a “jack of all trades and master at none.” Instead of trying to offer many things in an attempt to satisfy everyone, why not narrow your focus? Perhaps you have many products that you market, and in doing so, you only let your customers know a little about each one. Try focusing on some of your best-selling items or the items that you believe have the greatest potential, and talk them up! Give an extensive description of each one, describing in detail the benefits of that product or service and how it can solve your customers’ needs. This can help eliminate any lingering doubts the customer may have about that product and help establish you as someone who is committed to it.

Get More Opt-ins

Getting your potential customers to opt-in is an extremely effective way of boosting marketing muscle. By it, you have direct access to people who have already come to your site and who likely already have some level of interest. This gives you a chance to send out targeted marketing specifically to these people. You can also keep in touch with these clients, which helps build brand loyalty, familiarity, and trust.

When you have the opt-in option on your website, make sure it is in a prominent location in such a way that your customers’ eyes are likely to be drawn there first. Try putting it in a position of your page high up so that your customers will not have to scroll down to read it. Perhaps a prominent page you have consists of a sales letter. In this case, entrepreneur.com has this advice:

If you have a long sales letter, you should test placing your opt-in offer within your second “page” of text–after you’ve grabbed your visitors’ attention by identifying a problem they have and established your credibility by impressing them with your credentials, experience and glowing testimonials from happy customers.

You can also consider putting your opt-in subscriber form on every page of your website. This can be by means of a simple plug in that hovers in the corner, similar to the “follow” button that is familiar on many wordpress.com blogs. If you really want to be bold, you can try doing it by means of a hover add.

Hover Ads

Nobody likes popups. Nothing can be more annoying than getting to a website when a number of unasked for little boxes pop up that offer similar or related services that you then have to take the time closing. It got so bad that many browsers now by default block pop up ads from being displayed.

A way around this is to use what is called a hover add. Hover ads are similar to popups, but they aren’t popups, and won’t be blocked by browsers. When used tastefully and as unobtrusively as possible, they can be effective. You can use them tastefully by presenting an option to opt-in to a newsletter on them, or you can market a special sale that is relevant to where they were attempting to go. You can use them unobtrusively by not bombarding your visitor with them every time he or she clicks through to another page. Another way to make them unobtrusive is by giving the customer an easy option to continue on to where they wanted to go. Many large sites do this with a “continue on to page” hyperlink in the upper right corner-somewhere easy for a person to find, but not so prominent that they can simply click a large “No Thanks” button.

Focus on Your Customer

Many websites promote themselves, and rightly so. But this needs to be done in a way that focuses on customers. UXMovement.com says:

If your goal is to gain more users and customers, you should write headlines and copy that focus on them, not you and your company. Websites that talk too much about themselves or their company instantly turn users off…When users visit your site, they’re looking for a solution to their problems.

It’s a simple fact that people like to talk about themselves. Look at the enormous success of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and similar social media outlets, all largely filled with people talking about themselves.

Remember the obvious truth that customers came to your site to see how they could be helped, not how they can help you. They want to know how your product or service can make their lives better. If you focus on these things, and how your company is differentiated from others, you are on the right path.

Pay Per ClickAny business on the Internet today recognizes the value of moving traffic to their site. There are a number of ways to do this; however, most realize that without a good Internet Marketing campaign it can be very difficult to get the traffic flowing through their front door. The Internet can be a very competitive field with millions of sites vying for the attention of each person online. Without an effective campaign in place, the best one could hope for is a hit or miss flow of traffic.

An effective marketing tool that many businesses use is the Pay-Per-Click (PPC) method. This complex tool is an advertising method with the goal of meeting the needs of three distinctly different types of Internet users: the searchers, engines, and advertisers. According to marketing experts at Wordstream,

Pay-per-click marketing revolves around keywords. Keyword research, grouping, and organization is the key to creating winning AdWords campaigns, and search engines reward advertisers who can use effective keywords to create well organized, intelligently targeted pay-per-click campaigns.

It is a logical conclusion that these three groups that make up the bulk of Internet users can get their needs cared for through one single marketing campaign. If you are able to formulate your advertising efforts with PPC campaigns you will not only save money but will find yourself leaping far ahead of your competition.

It Is More Cost Effective

Because PPC companies only bill you for the times a user actually clicks on your ad and visits your website you will save a substantial amount of your advertising costs this way. This is vastly different from other types of campaigns that merely charge you for each time your ad is displayed. Your returns will also be at a much higher percentage since you’ll only have hits from those who are actually interested in your product or service. This is a much more beneficial marketing approach for small businesses that are just getting started.

PPC allows a business to target potential clients and test the market thoroughly in smaller bites without having to put out too much cash up front. With small sample campaigns you can realize the effectiveness of your campaign well before you have to spend large amounts of marketing dollars. As explained by professional marketers,

PPC enables you to set daily budgets for an account or campaign and edit bids on a per-keyword basis…. you can use PPC to measure the success and popularity of those keywords for yourself, and limit the amount spent on that experiment.

This combined with the fact that you can predetermine your advertising expenses before the campaign starts means you’re not open to any surprises along the way. Having more control over your advertising dollars spent is a major way to stay competitive while not having to spend too much money in the process.

You Get Company Branding

The two most popular search engines on the Internet today is reached by 80 million people daily. There is no other tool in use on the Internet that has such a wide range. When you establish your company’s name through these tools you are well on your way to self-branding.

Using PPC advertising to separate your business from the pack is an excellent way to create your own branding. When used properly you can use PPC to ride the tail winds of similar advertising campaigns and create your own niche. Focusing your ads on ways to target something different than your competitors can help you to develop a message that will be easiest for your customers to relate to.

So, rather than scream about your low prices like your competitors, you can use PPC to create a niche that will look and sound far more appealing to the potential consumer than anything that your competitors will have to offer. Setting yourself up as an expert in your field can make a major difference in your audiences’ response. At Search Engine Watch it is explained that,

In nature, as in business, competition for scarce resources drives evolution. But in nature, unlike business, evolution always means increased diversity. Less head-to-head scrambling. More niches. More efficient sharing of scarce resources.

Once you realize that each keyword in PPC represents a large group of those in search of what you have to offer you can create your campaign to meet their needs and filter through those that will not be of particular interest to you.

Target Your Specific Market

Another reason more companies are using PPC is because they can target a specific market with their ads. PPC marketing strategies will actually tap into an individual’s search history and then target the ads to their particular interest. This helps to cut through the millions of people that may be online for other reasons than you may have to offer.

If a customer is looking for gardening information your ad for cell phones will not be of interest to them. But if you’re an online gardening supply house then your ad will be just the thing they need. With PPC advertising, the ads will show up where they will be best used rather than at random among the millions of people that are sifting through the Internet on any given day. This helps you to focus your advertising and marketing dollars in a direction that will produce the best possible return on your investment making your campaign much more valuable than a standard Internet ad.

Over the past few years studies have showing that the results of PPC advertising can give you an immediate jump in traffic and sales to your site and produce some of the best results. As explained in affiliate-internetmarketing-success.com,

PPC or pay-per-click advertisement is one of the most effective and instant ways to bring traffic visitors to your website or blog…. It is always a great way to kick-start your online business.

There are, of course, many different ways to market your wares on the Internet but for those who are attempting to brand themselves as experts in their field or just getting into the Internet marketing field, using pay-per-click advertising is not only cost effective but an ideal way to establish your name among a wide audience of people.
